The Components XObject allows a Director for Macintosh presentation to check the Mac's software and hardware environment in order in order to warn users of required hardware, or perhaps to optimize which media to show or play. For instance, if certain sound compression components are installed, then files compressed according to that format could be chosen for playback; if not, then lower-quality, least-common-denominator sound files would be used. As another example, one could use the Components XObject to check whether optional QuickTime compressors such as Indeo, not bundled with QuickTime itself, are installed. Finally, you can check for the software components of specific pieces of hardware, such as drivers for specific MPEG boards or frame-grabbing video cards.
