How can I put up a splash screen while my projector loads?

Whith Director 8 simply make a BMP file on the PC or PCT file on the Mac named the same as your projector. For example if your projector is named "Projector.exe" the bitmap would be "Projector.bmp" This will cause Director to automatically load it as a splash screen while everything else loads.
